Data Sources

Where our information comes from, and under what licence.

The short version

Listings here come from a mix of official open data, publicly published business information, and details businesses supply about themselves directly. Every automated source is reviewed by a volunteer before it goes live (see About this site) - this page is about where the underlying data originates, not about how it gets checked.

Official open data (Open Government Licence)

Published by UK government bodies under the Open Government Licence v3.0, which permits reuse (including commercial reuse) provided the source is acknowledged - which this page does.

  • Food Standards Agency - the official food hygiene rating scheme register, covering every registered food business in the area. Feeds the hygiene rating badge shown on eat/drink and food-retail listings. ratings.food.gov.uk
  • Somerset Council - the council's own car parks directory, feeding the Parking category (location, facilities such as height restrictions and EV charging, and a link to the council's own page for current charges and permit terms - charges themselves aren't republished here, so they can't go stale on this site). somerset.gov.uk
  • DfT Bus Open Data Service - the Department for Transport's national bus timetable data, filtered to stops near Minehead, feeding the Travel timetables. bus-data.dft.gov.uk

Weather

Forecast data is from Open-Meteo, offered under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0), which requires a visible credit wherever the data is shown:

Business & tourism websites

Content published by a business or organisation on its own public website - a description, opening hours, a menu, contact details - read directly from pages the site's own robots.txt doesn't block automated access to. We check robots.txt (including for AI-crawler-specific blocks, not only generic ones) before reading anything from a new site, and never crawl a site that says no.

  • Visit Exmoor - the regional tourism directory's own public listings (eating, staying, things to do, shops). visit-exmoor.co.uk
  • Lidl GB - thank you to Lidl for publishing its own store page (name, address, opening hours, facilities) as open structured data (schema.org JSON-LD) that any site can read directly - exactly the kind of openness this page is here to encourage, and the reason the Minehead branch is the one supermarket listing here that stays automatically up to date. lidl.co.uk
  • Individual businesses' own websites - read the same way, one at a time, for venues whose own site is the best source for their own details.
  • West Somerset Railway and Regal Theatre Minehead - each publishes its own timetable/showtimes, read from their own public pages.

Information supplied directly by businesses

A venue's own owner or manager can claim an account for their listing and edit it directly - photos, description, opening hours, links - or propose changes for a volunteer to review. This is the business's own data about itself, supplied and licensed for use here by the business directly; see the owner terms for the full detail on photos and copyright.

Also used: geocoding

Where a source gives us an address or postcode but not map coordinates, we look the coordinates up via postcodes.io, a free, open UK postcode lookup - never used to add or infer information beyond turning a postcode into a map position.
